An Underground Turkish Mosque, Building of The Year 2015 at the World Architecture Festival

SICUPAK.COM - Sancaklar Mosque, located in Büyükçekmece, Turkey, is the building of the year 2015. This mosque is not only extraordinary in its design but also in location. It won the first-place award in the World Architecture Festival.

It is no surprise to anyone that this Mosque has won the prize. The design is inspired by the Hira cave in which Prophet Mohammad had his first revelation. What makes the location special is the fact that the Mosque is located under the ground, reminding us of ancient buildings. The design was drawn by the architect Emre Arolat and is 700.0 sqm.

The interior of the mosque is simple and spacial. The tension between man-made and nature is always present because of the natural stone stairs that follow the natural slope of the landscape. The mosque blends completely with the outside world.

In front of the Qibala, slits and fractures enhance the direction of the prayer, while allowing daylight to into the prayer hall. This creates a peaceful atmosphere.

The people of Büyükçekmece, as well as the country, are proud of having such an outstanding mosque. The mosque has its own charms and is worth visiting!
